Parthenon West Facade Architectural Sculpture - Athens, Greece

On 18 June 2026, for the first time in over two centuries, the west facade of the Parthenon stood free of scaffolding. The completion of the Acropolis restoration programme marks one of the most significant moments in the history of architectural conservation. This model was made for that moment.

The Parthenon needs no introduction. Built between 447 and 432 BC under the direction of the sculptor Pheidias and the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, it represents the absolute summit of the Doric order and remains the most studied, most admired and most influential building in the history of Western architecture. Its west facade carried the most dramatic of its sculptural programmes: the contest between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage of Athens, played out across the full width of the pediment in figures of heroic scale.

THE MODEL

This piece is a precision elevation study of the Parthenon west facade, presented as a three dimensional sculptural object. The complete facade is shown in its reconstructed architectural form, capturing the full composition from the three stepped stylobate base through the Doric colonnade and enriched entablature to the complete west pediment sculpture programme.

The original polychrome decoration of the Parthenon remains one of the most contested subjects in classical scholarship. Rather than commit to any single interpretive colour scheme, this model presents the building in the warm weathered stone of its surviving fabric , the aged Pentelic marble as it appears on the Acropolis today. It is a reconstruction of the architecture and sculpture as designed and built, wearing the patina of two and a half thousand years of survival. What the building looked like in 432 BC remains a matter of scholarly debate. What it looks like now, and what it was always intended to be in form and proportion, is what this model seeks to capture

THE SCULPTURE

The complete west pediment sculpture programme is fully realised at 1:75 scale. Athena and Poseidon at the moment of their divine contest for the soul of Athens occupy the centre. The rearing horses of their chariots, the attendant divine figures, the reclining river gods Kephisos and Ilissos at the extreme corners are every element of the composition present and individually resolved. The metope frieze below depicts the Centauromachy across the full width of the entablature. The acroteria at the corners and apex complete the composition.
The pediment sculpture programme has been reconstructed with reference to surviving ancient fragments held in the Acropolis Museum Athens and the Nashville Parthenon pediment sculptures completed 1931 supplemented by primary archaeological evidence.

THE ARCHITECTURE

Modelled directly from the primary measured drawings of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett, Antiquities of Athens, Volume II, 1787. Every architectural element has been resolved with exceptional accuracy and scholarly rigour from primary archival sources.

The column entasis, the subtle convex curvature that prevents the optical illusion of concavity in a straight shaft, is correctly modelled. The corner intercolumniation is contracted as built. The surface of each column drum carries individually modelled weathering texture replicating the pitting, cracking and drum joint character of Pentelic marble aged two and a half thousand years in the Attic sun.

Produced using precision digital fabrication in fine architectural resin, the surface resolution and detail retention is exceptional across all elements.

THE PAINTED EDITION

The weathered stone painted edition is finished in a fully hand painted Pentelic marble effect, replicating the warm honey-gold tone, surface weathering, biological staining and water streaking visible on the surviving monument today. Each painted piece is individually finished by hand.
